Recovery after surgery can involve swelling, fluid retention, bruising, tenderness, tightness, changes in tissue texture, and temporary restrictions in movement. Post-surgical massage should be individualized according to the procedure performed, your healing stage, and your surgeon's instructions.

At Wake Medical Massage, post-operative care may incorporate Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) using the Vodder Technique, gentle tissue techniques, and other stage-appropriate therapeutic approaches when appropriate.

The goal is to provide supportive care that complements your surgical team's recovery plan—not to replace your surgeon's instructions or medical care.

What Is Post-Surgical Recovery Massage?

Post-surgical recovery massage is not simply a standard massage performed after surgery. Surgical procedures can temporarily alter tissue, create swelling, change mobility, and produce areas of tenderness or tissue firmness.

Because of these changes, treatment must be adapted to the procedure and healing stage. Techniques that may be appropriate later in recovery may not be appropriate immediately after surgery.

When indicated, Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) can be an important component of post-operative care because it uses gentle, specific techniques rather than the deeper pressure associated with conventional massage.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Fits Into Recovery

MLD and post-surgical recovery massage are related, but they are not exactly the same thing.

  • Manual Lymph Drainage: A specialized gentle technique directed toward supporting lymphatic fluid movement.
  • Post-Surgical Recovery Care: A broader approach that considers the surgical procedure, healing stage, swelling, tissue changes, comfort, and mobility.

Your treatment plan may therefore change as recovery progresses. Early care may emphasize gentle lymphatic techniques and comfort, while later stages may allow appropriately selected therapeutic work for tissue mobility, fibrosis, scar-related restriction, or movement limitations.

For more information about the MLD technique itself, visit our Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) page.

Post-Surgical Procedures We Commonly Support

Post-operative care may be appropriate following a variety of cosmetic, reconstructive, or other procedures, depending on your individual circumstances and medical clearance.

  • BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) recovery
  • Liposuction and liposculpture recovery
  • Tummy tuck / abdominoplasty recovery
  • Body contouring recovery
  • Arm lift and thigh lift recovery
  • Breast lift and other breast procedures
  • Facelift and deep-plane facelift recovery
  • Face and neck lift procedures
  • Gynecomastia procedures
  • Appropriate reconstructive or orthopedic procedures

Not every person or procedure requires lymphatic drainage or massage. Treatment is individualized based on your surgery, symptoms, healing progress, and the recommendations of your surgeon or healthcare provider.

Swelling, Fluid Retention & Tissue Congestion

Swelling and fluid accumulation are common concerns during surgical recovery. You may notice areas that feel puffy, tight, tender, or congested.

Gentle Manual Lymph Drainage may be incorporated when appropriate to support lymphatic fluid movement. Treatment pressure is light and specific rather than deep or forceful.

Because swelling can vary considerably depending on the procedure and individual healing response, your treatment is adjusted rather than following a one-size-fits-all protocol.

Fibrosis, Firmness & Tissue Changes

Some people experience areas of firmness, hardness, lumpiness, or changes in tissue texture during recovery. These changes can occur as tissues heal and remodel after surgery.

When appropriate for your stage of recovery, treatment may include carefully selected techniques intended to support tissue mobility and comfort around areas of firmness or tissue change. Any work involving areas affected by surgery is adapted to the condition of the tissue and your surgeon's instructions.

Scar & Tissue Mobility Support

As incisions heal, scar tissue and surrounding tissues may sometimes feel tight or restricted. Scar-related techniques are considered only when appropriate for the healing stage and condition of the incision and surrounding tissue.

The focus is on gentle, appropriate tissue support—not aggressive manipulation of healing tissue.

Post-operative care should never be one-size-fits-all.
Your treatment is adapted to your procedure, healing stage, symptoms, and surgeon's instructions.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

  1. Consultation: We discuss your procedure, current concerns, recovery stage, and goals.
  2. Assessment: Your symptoms and areas requiring attention are reviewed within the scope of massage therapy.
  3. Individualized Treatment: Techniques are selected and modified according to your healing stage.
  4. Ongoing Adjustments: Your care can change as your recovery progresses.

Some patients may begin post-operative care during the early recovery period when appropriate clearance has been provided by their surgeon. Timing depends on the procedure, individual circumstances, and the surgeon's instructions.

Working With Your Surgeon

Your surgeon's post-operative instructions take priority. When appropriate, Wake Medical Massage can work within those instructions and modify treatment according to the procedure and healing stage.

  • Physician or surgeon clearance may be requested before treatment.
  • Treatment is modified according to the procedure and stage of healing.
  • Areas that are not appropriate for treatment are avoided.
  • Coordination with healthcare providers may occur when appropriate and authorized.

If you have new, worsening, or concerning symptoms after surgery, contact your surgeon or other appropriate healthcare provider rather than relying on massage therapy for medical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is post-op massage the same as Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
No. Manual Lymph Drainage is a specific gentle technique. Post-surgical recovery care is a broader approach that may include MLD along with other appropriately selected techniques as healing progresses.
How soon after surgery can I begin?
Timing depends on the procedure, your healing status, and your surgeon's instructions. Some patients may begin during the early recovery period when appropriate clearance has been provided.
Will treatment be painful?
Post-operative treatment is generally gentle and is adapted to your healing stage. Aggressive or unnecessarily painful techniques are not appropriate for healing surgical tissue.
Can you help with swelling after liposuction or a BBL?
Manual Lymph Drainage may be incorporated into recovery care when appropriate. Treatment is individualized according to your procedure, healing stage, symptoms, and surgeon's instructions.
Can post-op massage address fibrosis or tissue firmness?
When appropriate for your stage of recovery, carefully selected techniques may be used to support tissue mobility and comfort around areas of firmness or tissue change.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
A referral is not always required, but physician or surgeon clearance may be requested depending on your procedure, medical history, and stage of recovery.
